The revolutionary and super quick 5G mobile phone network requires revolutionary testing solutions that enable device and network manufacturers and operators to verify the availability and performance of the network.
Nemo Intelligent Device Interface (NIDI) allows for a quicker introduction of devices and services that utilise the 5G network into the market. This enables the testing of all mobile phone technologies from 2G to 5G, taking account of the unique features of each wireless technology. Huld was responsible for the design and mechanical engineering of NIDI.
A scalable, easy-to-use, and quick-to-install system
The customers of Keysight hoped for a new multifunctional system that would enable the use, flexible and quick installation in vehicles, and scalability of various mobile phone models from one handheld unit to an overall solution that consists of dozens of units and can be installed in various types of vehicles and, depending on the vehicle, in various locations inside the vehicle or e.g. inside a ski box on the top of the vehicle.
“The solid expertise of Huld’s design team in manufacturing technologies and especially in the moulding technologies of plastic speeded up the product development process significantly, as the suitability for production of the solutions was taken into account already during the concept phase. The shared 3D models that were easily available and also included electronics enabled an accurate integration of interfaces,” says Project Manager Eemeli Vedenoja from Keysight.

A diverse network and the latest manufacturing technologies enable shorter development times
During the prototype phase of the system, Huld’s manufacturer network was utilised, which enabled customised parts and components to be acquired quickly. Modern 3D printing also played a significant role.
“The views of Huld’s experts on cost-efficient assembly structures enabled the equipment to be made as competitive and compact as possible. This was especially beneficial in the demanding ski box installations that involve major changes in temperature and where the space available for the installation is restricted. We were able to get the prototypes of the equipment tested according to a quick schedule through Huld’s manufacturer partners,” explains Vedenoja.
Once the prototypes were ready, Keysight’s testing group installed the system in a vehicle and went for a long road trip from Oulu to Spain. During the journey, the functioning of the NIDI system was tested in various weather conditions and feedback was collected regarding its overall operation.
“The mechanical solutions of NIDI proved to be extremely efficient in a hard and demanding field test and their installation in the vehicle was quick”, says the Head of Partner Management Jukka Maliniemi from Keysight.
