Hilla Group is a widespread multimedia group. They are a sturdy partner, producing knowledge, visibility, experiences and digital solutions with a versatile and customer-oriented approach. Hilla Group creates content as well as publishes, prints, and distributes regional, municipal and local media all over Finland.

Hilla Group’s family of local newspapers includes more than 20 publications. The goal was to harmonize their wide range of online services. Hilla Group chose Huld as their partner because of Huld’s strong knowledge of both UX/UI design and web service design.

Iterative user interface design

The collaboration between Hilla Group and Huld began with workshops. During the workshops, the hopes, needs, and goals of the customer and the users were laid out. This helped with the harmonization of the user interfaces. The online services of the publications were also different from each other. Therefore, it was essential to investigate which features already were functional and what kinds of new solutions would be beneficial for the web sites and their users.

The new and uniform user interface for Hilla Group’s online services was born through iteration and close collaboration. Huld’s experts had specific knowledge of the media industry, which was a great advantage during the project, as the industry has specific, typical needs for online services.

”With recurrent components and adjustable parts, we created a template that can be adjusted and modified to meet the needs of different local newspapers regardless of their size or color scheme. When all online services share the same adjustable elements, Hilla Group’s visual image remains recognizable throughout all user interfaces.” – Leena Aho, Senior UX/UI Designer, Huld.

Continuous collaboration

After the visual design, interaction design and the preparation of user interface guidelines were finalized. The project was continued with creating the online services, and the design was brought to life. The elements, icons, and graphics of the new user interface were also used in the application that Hilla Group was developing in addition to the online services.

In the given time frame, a flexible and adjustable user interface was created. Its uniformity has already facilitated and enhanced the use of Hilla Group’s different online services. The collaboration was excellent, and it has been agreed that it will continue by developing the online services and UI design.
