EGW-02 Connectivity Edge Gateway is part of a cyber security initiative at ABB Motion Drives. It provides advanced analytics, high-end security features and cloud connectivity in ABB Ability™ Digital Powertrain and other environments, connecting directly to variable frequency drives in several Operational Technology (OT) contexts.
Huld’s cyber security experts have been providing security and technical consultation for the award-winning product’s development.
IEC 62443 as Cyber Security Backbone
Early on in the project it was decided that cyber security was paramount, and the family of cyber security standards for industrial automation IEC 62443 was chosen for the project. Likewise, Huld was chosen as a cyber security partner for this journey.
The project’s cyber security goals were for the team to obtain a level of security competence and prove it by obtaining two IEC 62443 certificates:
- For cyber security process and security lifecycle, the goal was Maturity Level 3 (ML3) of IEC 62443 part 4-1.
- For component-level technical requirements, the goal was Security Level 2 (SL2) of IEC 62443 part 4-2.
In the future, further similar certifications such as the marine UR E27 will be on the roadmap.
Trusted Cyber Security Partner
The goal of the cooperation was to provide support to the EGW-02 team. Huld’s cyber security team aimed at ensuring the technical capabilities of the product and team would be enough to obtain the certificates, as well as accelerate the certification process.
Huld’s consultants acted as part of the team providing security and technical expertise, working with several ABB teams in India and Finland, ABB’s cyber security team as well as TÜV Rheinland auditors.
Certified and Award-Winning Cooperation
In December 2023, the EGW-02 team obtained IEC 62443-4-1 ML3 certification from TÜV Rheinland, becoming the first in ABB Motion Drives to achieve this certification. In October 2024, EGW-02 team obtained the IEC 62443-4-2 SL2 certification for the product from TÜV Rheinland, again becoming the first in ABB Motion Drives to achieve this certification.
Moreover, the design of EGW-02 has been further recognized by two Red Dot Awards (Communication Technology & Smart Products) for product design in 2024.
As of today, Huld consultants are still actively participating in maintaining and advancing cyber security capabilities of the EGW-02 Connectivity Edge Gateway and maintaining IEC 62443 and other certifications, such as marine UR E27.
